Common Questions

Everything you need to know about professional HVAC care.

How often should I service my AC?

Once a year, ideally in the spring before the first heat wave. An annual tune up keeps the system running at its rated efficiency, catches worn parts before they fail in July, and is usually required to keep your manufacturer’s warranty valid. If your air conditioner is more than ten years old, or if it struggled to keep up last summer, book earlier in the season while appointments are still open.

Yes. 613 HVAC answers emergency heating and cooling calls 24 hours a day, including nights, weekends and holidays. If your furnace quits in a cold snap or your AC dies in a heat wave, call (613) 349-6646 and we will get a technician to you. Our regular office hours for quotes, bookings and non urgent work are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how much cooling an air conditioner delivers for the electricity it uses across a full season, so a higher SEER means a lower hydro bill for the same comfort. Many older units still running in Ottawa homes sit around 10 to 13 SEER, while current high efficiency models are rated well above that. Across the fifteen or so years a system lasts, that gap shows up on every summer bill, which is why SEER is worth weighing when you replace a unit instead of just comparing purchase prices.

We cover the greater Ottawa region. That includes Barrhaven, Nepean, Kanata, Stittsville, Orleans, Gloucester, Manotick, Riverside South, Greely, Osgoode, Metcalfe, Richmond, Carp and the rest of the city, plus nearby towns such as Carleton Place, Almonte, Arnprior, Kemptville, Russell, Embrun, Rockland and Winchester. We work in Ontario only, so we do not service Gatineau or anywhere else on the Quebec side. If you are not sure whether your address falls inside our area, call (613) 349-6646 and ask.

It depends on the size of your home, the efficiency of the equipment you choose, and what is already installed. Anyone who gives you a firm number before seeing your home is guessing. We do a proper load calculation, then give you a free written quote with the full cost in it before any work begins. Call (613) 349-6646 to book one.

Once a year, before the heating season starts. In Ottawa that means booking in early fall rather than waiting for the first hard freeze, when every HVAC company in the city is already backed up. An annual inspection checks the heat exchanger, cleans the burners, tests the safety controls and confirms the unit is venting properly, which matters for carbon monoxide safety as much as it does for your bill.

A well maintained gas furnace usually lasts fifteen to twenty years, and a central air conditioner ten to fifteen. Ottawa is hard on equipment, because the same house needs deep winter heating and real summer cooling, so systems here run more hours per year than they would in a milder climate. Skipping annual maintenance is the fastest way to end up at the short end of those ranges.

A useful rule of thumb: if the unit is past roughly three quarters of its expected life and the repair costs a meaningful share of a new system, replacing it usually wins on total cost. Age, the price of the repair, how efficient the current unit is, and how many times it has already broken down all factor in. We will tell you plainly when a repair is the smarter buy.

Usually the cause is airflow, not the furnace. The common culprits are undersized or leaky ductwork feeding that room, a closed or blocked damper, a missing return air path, or a system that was sized for a different floor plan than the one you have now. It is diagnosable, and it rarely takes a whole new system to fix.
